Leo Overview

The last week of July enters the heat and heart of Leo, an energy that likes to call the shots, and is not a natural at sharing the limelight, unless you’re willing to honor their elegance. Partnering work is wonderful for Leo, and ‘in his hour,’ because even kings and queens are stronger when they learn to trust, and ‘play well with others.’

Those with strong Leo energy usually have powerful physical hearts and therefore usually strong constitutions. It is the emotions of the heart that unbalance Leo.  This energy is all too easily hurt by not feeling appreciated, or loved enough.  Sitting in Baddha Konasana, taking time to appreciate oneself, to feel loved by the Universe in simply being, is an antidote to Leo dis-ease.

Leo’s ruling planet is the Sun. The Sun’s glyph, a circle with a dot in the center, symbolizes the giver or emanation of light, the un-limited source of divinity.

The circle symbolizes infinity, the totality of Oneness, and the dot is the point, or source of light, the opening of creative manifestation. In one’s chart the Sun represents the motivating power, the individuality, or essence of our Spirit, and ego.  When we remember to be in conscious attunement to our divinity/Sun, we are unlimited beings of possibility.

The Sun is a fixed star, though far from fixed. Like Earth, it revolves around its own axis, traveling in a prescribed orbit in space.  Since earth must follow the sun, we are taken on an extensive journey.  It travels through the Milky Way Galaxy toward the constellation of Hercules at the speed of 12 miles a second.  The length of our Sun’s year equals 200 million Earth years.  This is about how long it takes the Sun to make one of its orbital revolutions, traveling at the rate of 150 miles per second.  (Earth’s orbital speed is only 18.5 miles per second.)  The Milky Way Galaxy, along with about 2,500 of its neighboring galaxies, travels at the rate of 360,000 miles per hour toward the Hunting Dog constellation.  This Supergalaxy also has an orbit within an even larger unit in the cosmic order.  These ‘notes’ are quoted from Alan Oken’s “Complete Astrology.”

The Lion is a perfect symbol of Leo energy, basking in glory under the heat of a summer sun.  It has no fear, it follows no man, it has a mane of wild hair, it is dramatic, perhaps boastful, it needs to be noticed, but fears ridicule, it loves to play, but is overly dignified in the next moment.  In short, it is magnetic
