Pitta Dosha (Imbalances)

by Samantha on August 4, 2010

In hot summer days we enter Pitta territory; time to cool jets, not over-schedule, over-stimulate, stay up late, or push the river.  Rather, be in a slow, cool river.  Practice slow, deliberate Asana, and Pranayama. Take time for massage, or at least self-massage with cooling coconut oil.  Eat meals at regular times, preferably cool, heavy, dry foods, with sweet, astringent, or bitter tastes.  Reduce salt and oily foods.

If you find nerves, tempers, frustrations, upset stomachs getting the best of you, a Pitta Dosha imbalance, seek the opposite of its fiery-water nature. With a strong Pitta dosha be aware that imbalances in the energy are often caused by a jammed schedule, skipping meals, and deadline pressures.  Be sensitive to over-salted or spiced foods, too much alcohol, & smoking.  One of Pitta’s big issues is control, therefore surrender is the healing agent.  Like Vata, a well-paced daily routine is important. ‘Moderation’ the key word and work.  Anything that cools you down is a lovely balancing agent: soothing music, meditation, appealing scents, and of course, water; the ocean, a pool, streams, the sound of a fountain.  Surrender rather than control.  Be regular in your habits, avoid chaos and drama of the last minute push.  Spend time playing, especially when over-working.  Massage with cooling sunflower oil. Work in a cool environment.
