Fractal Dots

Second of three Breaths on connection.

Last week I wrote of maintaining the dynamic center as we connect new and old.  This week it’s about seeing the dots, for how we perceive something changes our capacity to do something about it.  Last night I watched a show on mathematical fractals.  Not knowing the first thing on the subject, I was fascinated by the concept, but more than that was hearing someone’s ability to see something entirely new, to call a vision into being from a totally unknown place. It fits with the concept, ‘when we are ready the teacher appears.’  So how do we make ourselves ready for new visions, new teachers?  How do we not let our eyes only travel old ruts?  How do we beckon new dots to take us on unknown paths of connection?

We are in a world of infinite possibilities and connection.  It’s part of our malaise, too many dots, too much choice, too little time for profound consideration, The noise and tumult, the unrelenting assault on the senses make connecting the dots we need and desire very difficult. Because my mind is fractal-full, I’m turning to nature for answers because that is what the fractal masters saw.  Benoit Mandelbrot, who originated the concept, perceived that the mathematical equations impeccably imitated nature.

Spider’s webs are some of the strongest, most delicate constructs known. Their tensile power can carry enormous weight and opposition. They are fractals. The heart is like that in its ability to carry huge loads, yet remain delicately poised, beating its perfectly imperfect rhythm…. it is also a fractal equation. Perhaps when we see from the heart, when we hold polarities delicately, with the flexibility of non-judgment, and maintain the powerful muscle required to stay on course we possess the possibility to stay well-connected? What in nature sends you to the moon? Perhaps it is the Moon? What message does its Fractal construct hold for you?

Taking small, precise measurements of something, such as the heart beat and enlarging it, yet remaining true to its original shape, size, and intention holds something magical.  We cannot simply leave the old behind, nor do without ancient structure. They can be jumping off places to expand vision and intention,.  Connecting new dots from old heart spaces is the mathematical equation that may save us all.

Seasonal Energies

Asana:  Connect the dots through three well known poses and see if you can’t bring a new point of view to not only the same old structure, but the connections themselves.  Try Child’s Pose, to Down Dog, to reverse Vira II.  How did you use breath? Feet? Back? Belly? Attitude? Drishti/focus?  Was there anything new you could bring to the flow?  Could you sing through it?  Try it again with a song and see if you ain’t smiling.  How does happiness feel spread throughout?

Health Notes:  Happiness is the true holy grail, so precious, illusive…. hidden treasure hoping to emerge through everything we do.

Astrology Notes: In the last week of fall and Sagittarian energy, we approach Winter’s Solstice on the 21st with the added excitement of a lunar Eclipse.  This is another of five lunations in the final degrees of a sign, which like Eclipses tends to pop or push the energy.  Sagittarians love the adventure of walking into new territory, exploring the unknown, philosophical or geographic, which is a good thing as new territory lies ahead.  Doors open and close with the Eclipse season. We focus on areas that need attention, cleaning out emotional closets, tossing garbage to make room for the new. This particular lunation is a Full Moon at 29 Gemini/Sagittarius, asking us to question how we communicate, what is our thinking process, connect with siblings and fellow travelers, and to clear worn debris from our environment.

Ayurvedic Notes: One of the most profound gifts of Yoga is that it brings the layered connections within and without the body into consciousness.  The obvious one is the physical to emotional and psychological.  There is also the channel system of mind and prana/ energy.  Yoga, Ayurveda, and ancient metaphysicians, consider the body a system of interrelated channels connecting to layers of the subtle body.  Like mathematical fractals, the body imitates nature; “as within so without, as above so below.” When we understand one connective layer, it brings the next possibility into consciousness, the next step into view.
