Solstices, like Equinoxes, are thresholds to the four seasons of the earth. Celebrated for centuries, they are ancient and ancestral. Would that we might return to their message of acknowledging and honoring the Earth, for these are Her holidays. Winter Solstice is the longest night, and darkest day, in the Northern Hemisphere. A moment when we call our light to nurture and lead the way. Here, we enter winter, head into holidays, and begin a new year. Astrologically, this takes place when the Sun hits 00 Capricorn, as Mother Earth gives birth to the Sun. Under Capricorn energies, we are asked to re-examine old boundaries and construction as we cannot enter a new year from shadowed configurations and outworn judgements.
This year, we have help from the heart-expanding force of Venus trine Jupiter leading into the Solstice. This Venus/Jupiter connection is a perfect energy to ask yourself, “What do I value? What is worth keeping? What am I ready to release?” Other oddly supportive energies have been Mars and Mercury traveling retrograde. They offered a slowed down, and yes frustrating time to turn action and thinking inward. They have put stones on our path so we have to reconsider ‘right use of will,’ and more elevated thinking.
Another confounding energy is our long stay under the confusing ‘liminal’ space of Neptune hanging on for dear life in the closing degrees of Pisces. It’s been a year or more of asking how we can serve our soul purpose, ignite our spiritual powers, acknowledge our Oneness. As few of us know what any of that is, we have been lost, wandering spirits in a vast universe, seeking direction. We might come to our senses with a better sense of direction come March 30 when Neptune enters the fiery ‘can do’ flames of Aires. It will be the first time since 1861 that Neptune inhabits Aires. Gird your loins to join the army of spiritual warriors, who arm in arm will slowly reconstruct the world toward right action.
I do not have to tell you we are in a time of enormous transitions, moving from old world, top-down patriarchy and old institutions of power and greed into the egalitarian and chaotic Aquarian sisterhood/brotherhood. Yes, this Solstice is a larger than life ending time of epic significance, shown by the step by step move of large cultural outer planets moving into new signs for long durations. It is a breakthrough time worthy of our pondering during the longest, darkest Solstice night. Breathe into this beginning with hope, not despair. Light yourself in love. And light your candles remembering you are a beacon for Self and others. If you feel your light is dim, reach out to a friend who would love to ‘light your fire.’ As the Sun is re-born, the same is asked of us. We are to re-discover what is most important. We are to ask how we can nurture the earth, as well as one another. From this tumultuous year, we are to understand and use the stronger muscle and deeper courage we have built.
